English Translation:

Jump restlessly in the garden, in the nest, in bowers
It is impossible to deprive mercury of its restlessness

Why should the eye used to chaste things
When it is able to see the valor of the Ghazi’s 7 soul!

O God, light the candle of Longing in the tulip’s heart
Make every speck of garden’s  dust a martyr searching for the Truth

The effect of spring showers exists8 in the Muslim’s tears
Pearls are to be produced again in the ocean of Ibr«hâm

The Book of the Muslim nation is being organized again
This Hashimite Branch 9 is going to blossom again!

The beloved of Shiraz has won the hearts of  Tabriz and Kabul10
The zephyr produces its  fellow traveler from rose’ fragrance!

The avalanche of calamity over Uthmanis is not to be bereaved
As the dawn is produced after destruction of myriad’s of stars!

Insight into the world is more difficult than the world’s sovereignty
Insight is produced only when the heart  melts into blood!

For thousands of years narcissus bemoans its lack of luster
The discerning person is produced in the garden with difficulty

Sing O Nightingale so that with your modulations
The falcon’s  heart in the pigeon’s frail body be produced

[11] Quhistan is a tract of land in Kerman, now in Iran. The falcons of Quhistan are famous for the elegance and swiftness of flight.

[12] Qaiser is the Caeser of the Roman Empire.

[13] Kisra is the persian emperor in whose reign Iran was conquered by Muslims.

[14] Haider is Hadhrat Ali ( May God be pleased with him) who was a cousin and son in law of the Holy Apostle and the Fourth of the Guided Caliphs (khulafa-e-Rashida) famous for his prowess, courage and spiritual as well as physical strength. He is proverbial for these virtues in Islamic literature.

[15] Abu Zar was a well known companion of the Holy Apostle and is proverbial for his piety, which includes faqr which has been tranlated as “contentment”.

[16] Salman is a well known companion of the Holy Apostle who was of persian origin, and is known as Salman-e-Farsi.

[17] Holy Spirit is the Angel Gabriel (Jibril)in Islamic Literature.

[18] This refers to the Mongol invasion on the Islamic world. Muslims were defeated and badly humiliated. This happened because of their spiritual and military weakness. This part of Islamic history is famous in Islamic literature. Subsequently the Mongols Accepted Islam and their services in the cause of Islam are also well known in history.

[19] This refers to the Holy Quran 11:117,which reads, “To Him is due the primal origin of the Heaven and the earth:When He decreeth a matter, He sayeth to it:’Be and it is’. “According to Iqbal’s theory of Khudi or self-cognizance, the purpose of God in the creation of the universe was to create ultimately His masterpiece, i.e. Man and endow Man with all the potentials of God’s vicegerent on earth and to train Man with divine guidance to

fit for this high position. For the details of the process of development of Khudi see Iqbal’s book “Asrar-e-Khudi” (Secrets of Self).

[20] This refers to the story of Hadhrat Yusuf (On whom be peace) (Joseph) as narrated in the Holy Qur’an. Joseph was thrown into a well by his jealous brothers. He remained there for a fairly long time after which a caravan arrived and rescued him.

[21] Badr was the first battle between the newly formed MilIat of Islam in Madina and the pagan Quraish. It was critical in that it established the stability and political credibility of Muslims.

[22] The battle of Honain was fought immediately after the conquest of Makka. This battle also was decisive in the sense that Muslims were almost defeated on account of their pride and reliance on arms and their numbers instead of their Faith and the truth of their mission. Ultimately, Muslims won the battle and this victory completed the sovereignty of the Islamic State of Madina over the Arabian Peninsula. The Master of Badr and Honain means the Holy Apostle.

[23] Or perhaps the line can be interpreted as His hidden spiritual strivings (for the good of the Ummah) have opened up before my eyes.

[24] The progeny of Hadrat Ibrahim (on whom be peace) (Abraham) comprises two branches, i.e. the Judeo-Christian or the Isaraelite branch and the Muslim or the Ismaelite branch. The latter is meant here.

English Translation of the complete Ghazal

The one I was searching for on the earth and in heaven        Appeared residing in the recesses of my own heart
When the reality of the self became evident to my eyes        The house appeared among residents of my own heart
If it were somewhat familiar with taste of rubbing foreheads 2    The stone of Ka‘bah’s threshold would have joined the foreheads
O Majnun! Have you ever glanced at yourself            That like Lailah you are also sitting in the litter

The months of the union continue flying like moments        But the moments of separation linger for months!
The one who concealed His Beauty from Kalam Allah        The same Beloved is manifest among beloveds
Do not ask of these Devotees, if you have faith, you should look at them    They have the illuminated palm up their sleeves

O seaman, how will you protect me from being drowned        As those destined to drowning get drowned in the boats also
The unsightful eye for whose spectacle is tantalized        That elegance of congregation is in these very recluses

Burn the produce of your heart with some such spark        That the Last Day’s sun may also be among your gleaners

The Beauty itself becomes the Lover of whose Beauty        O Heart! Does someone among the beautiful has that beauty?

The breath of Lovers can light up the extinguished candle    O God! What is kept concealed in the breast of the Lovers?
Someone became highly excited at your grace of Ma‘arafna    Your rank remained among the most elegant of all the Lovers

Serve the fakirs if you have the longing for Love        This pearl is not available in the treasures of kings
For Love search for some heart which would become mortified    This is the wine which is not kept in delicate wine glasses
Manifest Thyself and show them Thy Beauty some time        Talks have continued among the sagacious since long time
Silent, O Heart! Crying in the full assembly is not good    Decorum is the most important etiquette among the ways of Love
It is not possible for me to deem my critics bad        Because Iqbal, I am myself among my critics

garche Urdū dar uzūbat shakar ast lék Pārsī-am ze Hindī shīrīntar ast

Persian works, Asrar-e-khudi , Rumuz[Mysteries]-e-Bekhudi  Payam-e-Mashriq , Javed Nama (The Song of Eternity)
In 1930, elected to preside over at the annual session of Muslim League. In his presidential address at Allahabad, introduced the idea of Pakistan.
In 1930-31, he attended the Round Table conference in London to frame a constitution for India.
early hours of April 21, 1938  he recited these touching lines:

The departed melody may return or not!        The zephyr from Hijaz may blow again or not!
The days of this Faqir has come to an end,     Another seer may come or not!

Odes Part-I
* A free spirit I have, and seek no praise for it
* What avails love when life is so ephemeral?
* If my scattered dust turns into a heart again
* The world is tospy—turvy; the stars are wildly spinning
* O Cup—bearer! Give me again that wine of love for Thee
* My Lord has effaced the gulf between His world and mine
* Consuming fire for thee
* Dost Thou remember not my heart’s first rapture
* When flowers deck themselves into ruby bloom
* My power of making music
* I had believed my arena was under the starry heavens
* Reason is either luminous, or it seeks proofs
* O Lord! This world of Thine has a winsome face

Matchless is the soil of Hindustan (India)
in it fewo love , compassion and fidelity,
As sure as the sun rises from the east
So surges from this land sincerity,

The creation of Iqbal

Though I admire Allama Iqbal as an excellent poet but I do fully believe that he is the person responsible for the photographs below. The person who knows the facts understands it well. Mark the searchlights and the barbed wires!!!

Some more searchlights . What is the diffence in the both side of barbed wires and search lights?

Which side are these cows?

No matter which side of the fence it lies, I am impressed with the greenery of the area even in the deep summer!

Atiya Faizi

The information about the Atiya Faizi has been taken from http://thinking-lifeandyou.blogspot.com/2009/11/makhfi-hidden-one.html

Biographical Data : Name : Atiya Begum Faizi Period : 1876 – 1967

Biographical detail : She was an impressive figure in the socio-cultural field, of the Indian sub-continent during the early half of the 20th century. Atiya went on a scholarship to London in 1906. She visited France, Italy, Germany, China, Japan and many other foreign countries. She complied a book on music that was published from London. Iqbal and Shibli were among her good friends or to some extent admirers. Atiya was married to a painter called Faizi Rahimin. The couple migrated to Pakistan in 1947 at the invitation of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. She is the author of “Sangeet of India” and “Indian Music”. Atiya Begum was born at Istanbul and hailed from a respectable family of Bombay. They were three sisters, Zohra, Nazli and Atiya. They were probably one of the foremost families who sent their daughters to UK for studies. Nazli Begum was married to H.H Nawab Sidi Sir Ahmad Khan Sidi Ibrahim Khan, Nawab of Janjira (1879-1922) and passed away in 1964. hmm…whenever I started someone to read…..I read like I am in love with him/her. Nowadays…..Iqbal is on my mind….even I have started to have him in my dreams…lol… Mr Shaffique wrote extremly tremendous biography of Iqbal and first thing which attracts my attention was the freindly-lively lovely conversation or meetings of Iqbal and Atiya, who certainly was not the first woman to travel to Britain, but she certainly was one of the earliest to have wrote about her tour to Britain. And as all the normal curious reader I started searching for Atiya Faizi and found it a little sad that despite of all her intellectual status, we had just gave her the remebrance of relationship with the poet-philospher Iqbal. The letters of Iqbal to Atiya Faizi I read (17th July 1909), did not confirmed any colorful relationship between the two instead I think it was a letter to his(Iqbal) friend(Atiya) to whom he can speak out of his heart. Beacuse I personaly believe no one can speak about his/her unstable mental state to ones lover. Its human nature to behave as strong as one can be infront of his lover. Iqbal was a poet and after all a poet can always use their own poetry while writing to some of his/her friends and can use it as a metaphore. They might have exchanged some pet phrases to express their friendship, time they spent together and gratitude which Iqbal the same time include in his letters to different people too. They were not solely wrote for Atiya. It is also evident that Atiya dislike Iqbal’s failure to visit her in Janjira where she used to live with her sister for condolence of Atiya’s mothers death. If this failure was only due to Iqbal’s busy schedule or lack of money, Atiya was such a generous woman she would had forgave Iqbal but as it was not both of the above reasons she belived that Iqbal ignored her intentionaly. There are so many other things elaborating the same about the both intellects of the same time. However, as I always like to read about great women of world, I am happy that I found one more pearl from the history and Atiya Faizi would be an inspiring increase in my great women of world list. I am trying to purchase her daily diary (roznamcha) which was translated and published by OUP-India, “From Colonial Bombay to Edwardian London”. But unfortunately couldn’t found it here in OUP – Pakistan. hmmm…..there is always something very nice and worth reading about these people but I do also see that all those people who had made so many accomlishments in history never had an easy life. I dont know why to achieve something one must go through all these hardships and sometimes found oneself lost. In 1912 Atiya got married to a painter called Samuel Fyzee Rahamin (1880-1964) who was an accomplished painter and a Jew by faith. He embraced Islam at Atiya Begum’s insistence. Fayzee Rahamin was at one time the art tutor of Mary of Teck, queen consort of George-V of the Great Britain. The couple were invited to make Karachi their home by the Quaid-i-Azam. The couple sold their beautiful house, the Aiwan-i-Riffat, in Mumbai and moved to Karachi and purchased a house in Karachi and named it Aiwan I Riffat . After moving to Karachi, the couple opened their doors to the local intellectuals and bequeathed the paintings of Fyzee Rahamin and other books and artifacts, their dearest possessions, to the citizens of Karachi. Next door to the Arts Council are the grounds of the villa of Atiya Fyzee and Fyzee Rahamin. Unfortunately the estate was neglected and their legacy disregarded as the the owners wished it to be converted into a Art museum but now The construction of Aiwan-e-Riffat- Fyzee Rahamin Art Gallery is under way or might have been completed. After a span of some years, they were asked to leave their house as it was unauthorized (Strange enough?), helplessly she was made to leave Aiwan i Rifat at and took shelter in a hotel. How long could they afford to live in a five star hotel , soon they were forced to dispose off some of her prized furniture and artifacts for nothing to the Junk Dealers and even had to borrow to live in Karachi where they were invited by the founder of the country. I wonder if she had chosen to live in India and a Kala Mandir or Sangeet academy would have been offered , she would have created much more things to live long than what we have today. She was well versed in Music and knew Ragas so well that one of best books on Music of India has been written by her. The Music of India was first published in 1925. She took a lot of pain to establish the Bhatkhande College of Music in Delhi. A large collection of her personal letters were lying unattended including letters by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Maulana Shibli Nomani (the two-volume Makateeb-i-Shibli brought out by Darul Musanifeen contains no letter by Atiya), Jigar Muradabadi, Sarojni Naidu, Maulana Shaukat Ali, Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar George Bernard Shaw and Iqbal. Atiya Begum Fyzee is no more but her life story is not finished as we have got such tantalizing stories to cherish.

Sir Iqbal’s letter to Atiya Faizi copied from http://www.chowk.com/tag/Atiya-Faizi

I have copied the letter of Sir Iqbal from the site http://www.chowk.com/tag/Atiya-Faizi.  This is for my own use.

17th July 1909

My Dear Miss Atiya!

I am totally grateful for the letter I have just received. Today, since morning, my temperament has been uncommonly joyful. Therefore if you perceive the sweetness of jocularity in this missive consider it a compulsion. I have not changed my plan. You do not have the right to come to a different conclusion due to my absence. Sometimes I do feel afraid of the thought of two boats, one steamer, two legs and two quays. The journey is not less than a mighty labour, the completing of which could give me the fame of Rustam. Rustam’s need was urgent whereas I am not even sure of the extent of my own need. Whenever I intend to do something I usually leave myself in the hands of destiny and let the winds carry me where they will.

Although you are probably unaware of your countless acts of kindness towards me I feel them so much that my pen is incapable of expressing it. This is because it is not possible to express indescribable feelings in words. Come, let us leave this matter here!

You too say that you have come to an absolute decision and that there is no possibility of change in it. Please inform me too about those sweet complaints which you mistakenly attribute to one ‘contemptible man’. If these complaints are about me, then please do not leave them without giving me details!

Doubtless, for everyone life is just the name for waiting for death. I too am desirous of journeying to the other world. When I get there, I want to see my Creator and ask him to explain logically my mental state and this will not be an easy task! You should have no complaint about me: I myself am an enigma to my self. Years earlier I wrote:

Iqbal himself does not know Iqbal

There is no jest in this, by God there isn’t!

Many people have expressed similar views about me. And the truth is that when I am alone I have often laughed at myself. I am in the process of giving a final reply to these accusations and allegations. You will find this reply in the pages of ‘Makhzan’. [1]

I have expressed, in an excellent manner, what others have said about me but have still to write the reply in poetic form. I was saddened when I learnt that you felt deep sorrow at my loss of respect and following in northern Hindustan. Be sure that I do not care about the respect of others. I don’t believe in living for the praise of others.

What life is that which is dependent on another soul?

Leave aside too the reliance of a life of fame!

People believe in ostentation and respect only it; I live a life without ostentation and am miles away from hypocrisy. If ostentation and hypocrisy are the means for me to achieve respect and a following then may God make me so alien and unconnected to this world that not a single tear is shed for me nor a single elegy written. Those people get public acclaim and following who live their lives according to the false notions of morals and religion of the masses. I cannot, for the sake of the respect of the masses, lower myself and suppress the natural freedom of Man, by accepting their points of view. Byron, Goethe and Shelley were not able to get the respect of their contemporaries. Although I cannot compare myself to them as a poet I am nevertheless proud that, at least in this regard, I can rightly be compared to them.

Have I ever guided you? You have never even needed my guidance in scholarly matters. I do remember that I introduced you to Plato. That’s all. This introduction was so short and cursory that, in this matter, I do not consider myself as having the honour of your scholarly guidance.

You say that I am guilty of not respecting your wishes.

“The intellect is burnt in astonishment at how strange this is!
